YouTube learning time calculator

A playlist that says 10 hours is not a 10-hour job. Enter the videos, how you study and the time you have, and see how long it will really take and when you will finish.

Your estimate

to learn from 10 h of video — about 2.5 times the running time.

How the estimate is worked out

The calculator adds three things:

  • Watching = video length ÷ playback speed, plus the extra time you spend paused, rewinding and writing notes.
  • Practice = video length × the practice ratio you choose. Practice is based on the original length, because doing the work does not get faster when the video plays at 2x.
  • Review = a share of watching plus practice, for going back over notes and flashcards.

The number of weeks is the total divided by your weekly hours, rounded up. It is an estimate for planning. Your own pace depends on the subject and on what you already know.

Using the result

If the finish date is later than you hoped, there are only three things to change: fewer videos, more hours a week, or a narrower goal. Cutting practice makes the number smaller without making the learning faster.

Enter the weekly hours you have actually had over the last month. A plan built on honest hours gets finished.

Questions

How long does it take to finish a YouTube course or playlist?

Longer than its running time. Pausing, rewinding and taking notes add to the watching time, and practice usually takes at least as long as the videos. A common result is two to three times the total video length. Divide that by the hours you study each week to get the number of weeks.

Does watching at 2x speed halve the time?

It halves the playback time only. Pausing, note-taking, practice and review do not speed up, so the total time to learn falls by much less than half. Faster playback also makes dense material harder to follow.

How much practice time should I plan for?

For hands-on skills such as programming, an instrument or design, plan one to two hours of practice per hour of video. For conceptual subjects, half an hour to an hour of problems or recall per hour of video is a reasonable start.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our servers or saved.
